Psalter Project
In many churches, the Psalms are often read responsively as part of the worship service. This project (when complete) provides a resource where every verse of every Psalm is available for use in the public worship of God. The files are provided in electronic format and may be freely downloaded from this page.
At the end of this first, phase, every verse of every Psalm may be downloaded as a separate file. The next phase will be to consolidate them into six files.
This project does not include music. (Please let me know of an appropriate musical Psalter to include as a link on this page.)
Files are available in Microsoft Word format for printing and ASCII text format for easy cut-and-paste into such programs as EasyWorship and PowerPoint.
All content is placed in the public domain for the glory of God and the forwarding of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Future direction: Once all Psalms are formatted, I plan to consolidate the files. I will also review each Psalm so that the leader-answer is closer to a conversational style. I also plan to change the tag "Response:" to the the traditional "Answer:" (see The Book of Common Prayer) since it makes the formatting more uniform when cutting and pasting from the files to worship materials.
Please report any errors you may find to Stephen A. Curry, Pastor ([email protected]) Thank you.
- The translations used for this project are in the public domain. Those translations are the American Standard Version, the King James Version, and the World English Bible
- The leader and answer alternate for each verse. In general, odd number verses are read by the leader, even number verses are the response. For Psalms with an odd number of verses adjustments are made so all Psalms end with the answer.
- The responsive readings use the text and format used in the translation with only the modifications outlined as follows:
- The titles in the text (such as "A Psalm of Asaph") are not included
- Translator annotations such as footnotes are removed. (Readers should refer to full versions of these Bibles for translator's notes)
- The term "Selah" and other unknown terms suspected to be musical directions are removed
- Following a longstanding tradition of the church, pronouns referring to God are capitalized (for example, Him, Thou, and My)
- In the American Standard Version and World English Bible, long lines are separated into two lines for readability in printed form
- In Word, for Psalms that are long enough to continue into the next page, each page will end with the answer.
